The Clarington

Culver City, California

A tech company in Culver City needed to transform a narrow yard into a comfortable environment where team members could work or relax.

SALT gave the space a distinct personality using a bold design language that fluidly connects indoors and outdoors.

Tropical Inspiration

To pack a graphic punch into the small space, SALT took inspiration from the curving paving patterns designed by Roberto Burle-Marx for Copacabana Beach in the 1970s. Applied to a relaxed, contemporary work environment, these shapes take on a distinctly California feel.

Concrete paving is striped in three tones that meander in a loose, wave-like form. Built-in planters from cast concrete mirror this design with a playful, wiggly edge. Employees and visitors can perch on the planter’s edge to get some work done outside or gather for a coffee break.

Native Gardens with a Mediterranean Note

The plant selection is distinctly regional, requiring minimal maintenance and water. Sturdy succulents, a delicately blooming palo verde, and vivid green sedges form lush, colorful volumes. Pairing well with the architecture to help soften and define at the same time.

These natives blend harmoniously with Mediterranean species, which add a note of formality to balance the design’s exuberance. A climbing grapevine creates a dense, leafy layer over the yard’s fence; and classic rosemary, trimmed into a hedge, lends aroma and woody texture.
