Pacoima Wash Feasibilty Study

Pacoima Wash Feasibilty Study

Los Angeles, California

For over a decade, the Pacoima Wash has represented an opportunity to turn a 4-mile stretch of the concrete flood channel into a greenway offering biking and walking paths, community gardens, native wildflower meadows, and so much more.

Pacoima Beautiful has tirelessly championed its vision to transform the Wash into an open space benefiting the neighborhood and region. SALT partnered with the community-based nonprofit to translate this grassroots vision into an implementable plan.

Small Steps, Big Goals

These smaller, achievable projects link to one another along the Wash to form a continuous greenway. Taken together, they represent an ambitious vision that is rooted in realistic timelines and funding.

SALT joined Pacoima Beautiful as a partner in advocacy, helping to secure a preliminary commitment from LA County Parks and Recreation to maintain and operate the future corridor. This represents a major breakthrough towards making the community’s vision a reality.

From Flood Channel to Greenway

Pacoima is a dense urban area with minimal park space. Due to its adjacency to freeways and legacy of industrial pollution, the community carries a disproportionate environmental burden.  For years, residents have imagined the Pacoima Wash as a future open space to walk, bike, play, gather, and experience nature. Yet there are major obstacles: the Wash runs through over 40 parcels, acts as flood control infrastructure, and is governed by multiple agencies and jurisdictions.

Feasibility Study

"Rooted in the hopes and dreams of local residents, this project is about more than infrastructure—it’s about healing our relationship with the land, increasing climate resilience, and building a space that future generations will be proud to inherit."
