Junipero Beach Park
Long Beach, California
A popular destination on the Long Beach waterfront, Junipero Beach occupies a central location adjacent to city landmarks: Bixby Park, Bluff Park, and the Long Beach Museum of Art.
As part of a broader coastal planning effort, SALT designed new facilities for health and wellness at Junipero Beach: a 7,500-square-foot playground, a fitness area, and new basketball courts.
An Invitation to the Coast
SALT and RA-DA worked with the City of Long Beach on a beachfront improvement plan to draw more residents to the beach.
Linked by a continuous new promenade and bike path, four destinations along a 3.5-mile stretch now offer beachgoers new places to eat, rent beach equipment, play basketball or use exercise equipment, and enjoy amenities such as a visitors’ center and public restrooms.
Play by the Port
As part of the plan, SALT and RA-DA assigned a theme to each new beachfront site. Due to its central location, Junipero Beach presented an opportunity to offer community amenities for health and wellness. Basketball courts and outdoor workout stations adjacent to Bluff Park provide an easily accessible resource for teens and adults. Closer to the water, a brightly colored playground welcomes younger children and their parents. The sites are linked by a pedestrian and bike path paved with bold lettering.
The playground sits next to a new concession stand designed by RA-DA, with a clear view of the ocean and passing ships. SALT was inspired by a Treasure Island theme that references the park’s portside location: kids climb, swing, and slide among netted rope structures like pirates or sea captains. The high rope towers provide a physical challenge to anyone willing to try, and the views from the top across the beach and ocean are well worth the effort.
"Nice new playground... The slides are pretty high up. My grandson was hesitant [but] he watched, learned and followed what the other kids were doing and conquered his fear. He had so much fun!"
