Charles White Park Playground
Altadena, California
A renovation of the playground at Charles White Park had just been completed when the Eaton Fire devastated Altadena.
SALT’s upcoming restoration of the 5-acre green space will rebuild amenities that bring the community back together through creativity and connection, including sports fields, playgrounds, a water feature, walking paths, a demonstration garden, and a new community building
Rebuilding a Beloved Landmark
Remarkably, a distinctive coast live oak at the heart of the park survived the fires, standing as a symbol of legacy and hope. The playground will nestle in the shade of the oak’s canopy, embraced by existing rock walls that curve around the site. The renovation will introduce new features chosen by the community: an inclusive playground with expanded climbing and play experiences, a splashpad, walking paths, outdoor fitness equipment, increased shade canopy, pickleball courts, native demonstration gardens and gathering spaces.
An Altadena Legacy
Located at the heart of Altadena’s Black community, the park is named for African American artist Charles White. To honor his enduring influence, the park will feature artworks created by local artists, ensuring that his spirit of creativity and activism lives on.
“Art must be an integral part of the struggle. It can’t simply mirror what’s taking place. It must adapt itself to human needs. It must ally itself with the forces of liberation.”
— Artist Charles White
